We have just returned from a break with our family – a beautiful villa within the La Manga area of Spain. The men played some golf, the girls worshipped the sun and the kids utterly loved playing in the pool! Utter bliss. In fact, I think the father’s preferred playing within the swimming pool with the children rather than playing golf poorly!

However we have a tip which we thought was worth posting and not only made life easier however the children enjoyed it too – we used hooded kids towels around the swimming pool to enable getting the children dry without causing lots of stress! We found this much easier than big beach towels.

We used lots of sunscreen and also protective bathing suits (including one really stylish all in one diving suit style outfit for our two year old), however this still left us thinking how we got the kids dry. Dead easy as it turns out. We left the towels on a sun lounger and when we needed to get the baby out of the swimming pool, got them to the end, whipped off their soaked swimming stuff and wrapped them up in a hooded towel.

We used sun protective towels too that meant the little one’s skin remained protected from all of the sun’s uv rays. By quickly wrapping the child, we got all of them dried off too whilst making them look really adorable! In truth, many of our favourite photographs from the break are the ones of the children wrapped up in their towels, faces peaking out while having a refreshing drink or ice lolly – they look seriously sweet!

Knowing the towels are sunlight resistant too meant we did not have to stress about quickly getting suncream onto damp skin. The kids got wrapped up, got on a sun bed and then once they’d had a little break, we creamed them up again and off they went playing.

For a mother on a beach or perhaps round the pool, making things easy is actually key to being able to enjoy yourself too. It is your holiday as well! There’s nothing worse then getting all flustered and the children getting upset when the temperatures are soaring high – why not help make life and the getaway easier by packing one thing which you currently have at home?!

Our pools are exposed water bodies and therefore subject to contamination. Pollution can be in the pool water from the environment (ex: wind, rain) or from swimmers.

There was a dramatic increase in infections and infectious diseases in home swimming pools in recent years. Some strains of bacteria and viruses have developed resistance to chlorine as a disinfectant we use in our pools. Others are destroyed very slowly. Therefore, there was a growing demand for alternative sanitizers can kill quickly and effectively disease-carrying organisms.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to prevent bacteria and viruses from entering the pool water. In pools with a maximum swimmer load, the level of contaminants in water is very high. Sick persons or persons recently recovering from sickness are asked to refrain from swimming, but many ignore this medium. Chlorine breaks down rapidly in the presence of high contamination and the swimmer and the load due to the effects of UV rays and heat. With these factors in mind, many maintainers of chlorinated pool water simply add extreme amounts of chlorine into the pool in the hope that the disease can be prevented.

The total dependence of chlorine to disinfect the pool is illogical in light of the results of recent investigations. There is unequivocal evidence of the effectiveness of additives or non-chlorine water treatments that can supplement the pool chlorine in the water safer to create the group. Elements such as copper and silver have been widely accepted as a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Patented products, like the Pool Wizard make good use of this knowledge in the production of disinfectant pools need to respond to microorganisms that chlorine cannot destroy.

Below are some references to illnesses resulting from swimming pool water:

~ Chlorine can take up to 4 days to neutralise Cryptosporidium parvum, the causes of severe illness and transmitted through pool water, despite a balanced pool chemistry and free chlorine levels 0f 2.oppm. (CDC – Emerging Infectious Diseases)

~ Out of 282 pools tested, over 50% of the pools which had a chlorine level above 2.0 ppm still had both E. Coli and Pseudonomas bacteria present. (Dr. Peter Gaffney, Professor of Microbiology at Georgia State University, “Microbiological Evaluation of Swimming Pools in Fulton County Georgia (Atlanta)”)

~ “Swimmers had significantly more eye, ear and skin infections than non-swimmers, largely because of high bacteria and virus levels in pools, according to Illinois Public Health Researcher, Linda Berrafato.” (USA Today)

~ “Swimming asthma” has been observed, especially in young children, as a result of breathing in the by-products (trihalomethanes) of chlorine used in swimming pools. (Reuters Health; Toxicology Letters, 72) ~ Liver, kidney or central nervous system problems and increased risk of cancer have been observed as a result of the by-products (trihalomethanes) of chlorine use. (EPA – Safe Water Regulations)

~ Eye and nose irritation, stomach discomfort and anemia can occur as a result of chlorine (Cl2 or ClO2) or chloramines in the water. (EPA – Safe Water Regulations)

~ Outbreaks of illness from recreational water in 2000 were 228% higher compared to 2 years earlier. (Center for Disease Control)

~ Diarrhea has been steadily on the rise since the mid-1980s as new germs appear that are increasingly resistant to chlorine used to disinfect pools. (Michael Beach, CDC medical epidemiologist)

~ “The EPA has raised skin absorption of chlorine to its top 10 carcinogen Watch List.” (The Washington Post, June 1994)

Shore Feet are waterproof soft soled shoes with a non slip sole which are specifically designed for babies and toddlers to wear at the beach or the pool to protect the feet and prevent any slips or falls.

Shore feet were designed and created 5 years ago by the company Kool Sun. Kool Sun specialise in clothing which protects children against the elements and was established by parents who struggled to find what they needed for their own children. Shore feet were created as they couldn’t find any waterproof, non slip soft soled shoes for babies or toddlers which could be worn at the beach or swimming pool. All of the shore shoes available on the market were for children aged 5 and over and so out of frustration they created their own shore shoes.

Shore Feet soft soled shoes are made using Neoprene, this is a synthetic rubber material which was originally used as an oil resistant replacement for natual rubber, however due to Neoprene’s unique properties it is now used for a diverse range of products. Neoprene resists damage caused by the sun and has superior strength so it was a perfect material to use when producing shore shoes for babies and toddlers.

Shore Feet’s soft soled shoes are easy to pull on and off and due to the strength of the Neoprene material they can be twisted and flexed without causing any damage to the shoe. Due to this flexibility Shore Feet shoes give the feet the freedom to move and allows them to sit in their natural position, this helps to balance and stabilise the feet as the toes can grip the floor.

The cushioning nature of Neoprene means that these shore shoes provide comfort when walking or crawling and the Neoprene material also means that the shore shoes are waterproof and also fully insulated to prevent the feet from getting cold, especially when in cold water.

The soft soled Shore Feet are loved by parents and children alike due to their practical features and as they’re available in a variety of bright colours they’re great fun to wear.
