How Much Can We Protect Our Kids?

Apart from the real dangers which exist, we are also tormented by all the imaginary ones that we can think of in our worst case scenarios. There are so many books and programmes regarding child safety and safety tips, and the advice ranges from safety for kids in the home to swim safety and safety in waterat home, i.e. bathing and playing with water.

Protecting children should be the number one duty of an adult and sadly this is not always the case, to the detriment of children and the shame of adults. Parents spend the first few years of a child’s life trying to keep them safe from physical dangers, and often ignore the mental and emotional dangers out there for a child.

From the moment a baby is born, a parent should ensure that their child is made to feel safe, secure and protected. A child needs unconditional love and yes it does have the right to feel that it is the centre of your world, since its whole life revolves around you and the care you provide. Physically we can try to baby proof our house as far as we are able to, but there will still be certain things we cannot anticipate and prepare for. Accidents happen in all homes and it is important that we know how to deal with emergencies and minor accidents.

All this is even before the children step out of the house, and have to face things like road safety, swim safety, stranger danger, kids wandering off and getting lost, not to mention the threat of kidnapping we see around every corner!

We need to also realise that safety for kids are affected by so many things other than the physical dangers. They need a supportive and healthy atmosphere in which to flourish and any problems within their surrounding environment are picked on and can cause both short and long term problems. They need to be protected from too much negativity and this covers things like violence on the TV, fighting between parents, bullying, emotional, physical and sexual abuse ( both witnessed and experienced) and so many other factors.

It is a full time job and there is so much we need to protect our children from, that we also need to remember to not scare them and wrap them in cotton wool.

Safety Tips In Using Highchair For Your Baby

One of the most useful things that a baby must have is a highchair especially when he starts eating solid foods. However, a highchair is not necessary for babies until he is able to sit up.

Manufacturers have developed baby highchairs with different kinds of features, which make it more comfortable for the child and more convenient for the parents and caregiver.  Some highchairs have padded seat covers for comfort.

Having a chair with wheels is not necessary as the baby keeps on moving. You can also adjust the height of some highchairs so that you can level it to the height of your table when eating. Some models have foot rests that can be adjusted as your baby grows. Another new feature of this baby chair is that they can be folded for easy storage.

When buying this chair, the base should be broad and stable to prevent it from tipping when your baby leans on one side of the chair. It is a good idea then to teach your baby to sit up all the time.

Highchairs available in the market are made of different materials such as wood, metal and plastic. Most of the highchairs made of all-wood do not have height adjustment mechanism.

No matter how stable the baby highchair is, it is important that you take precautionary measures to avoid accidents. Do not leave your child unattended. Before putting him on his throne, you should have everything ready. Make sure that you put on the strap every time you put your baby on the chair.

If you open a folded highchair, be sure that it is locked in open position to avoid possible collapse on the furniture and may cause accident to your baby. It is also a good idea to check every part of the chair every time your baby uses it. Also, check the foam cover if it is not torn as your baby may swallow small pieces of foam.

While highchairs give comfort for the baby and convenience for the parents, it is important that you ensure safety for your baby in buying one.
