Babies need their pacifiers. These simple items allow them to suck – one of the most intrinsic and basic human needs.

Pacifiers are anatomically created to be used during the first two years of the child’s life. As a toddler grows up, parents start taking away the pacifier. Even if the pacifier is taken away, children get used to sucking their thumb, a harmful habit that can lead to bite problems.

The pacifier needs to be taken away before the toddler turn 3. This is the time when the child’s jaw is developing and sucking on a pacifier could have a harmful influence.

Problems Related to Pacifier Usage

If the toddler continues sucking on a pacifier for more than two years, a number of problems could occur.

If the toddler sucks on the pacifier all the time, some of the teeth could be misplaced and pushed forward. These deformations can result in chewing problems.

When teeth get pushed forward, the child will start breathing through the mouth instead of through the nose. The mouth cavity will get dried faster, which increases the risk of cavities appearing.

How to Get a Toddler to Stop Using the Pacifier

You need to get your child used to staying calm without a pacifier at the age of eight months. This is when the child gradually stops sucking and starts chewing on food.

Substitute the pacifier with a rubber or gel toy that can be chewed. This will make the transition smoother and the child will not miss sucking on something.

The child should not be subjected to additional pressure when you are trying to take away the pacifier. It is inappropriate to start the process if the parents are quarreling or going through divorce, if a senior family member has passed away or if any other traumatic event is taking place in the family.

Get the toddler used to the fact that the pacifier will appear only at bedtime, helping it to fall asleep effortlessly. If the child is used to sucking on the pacifier all the time, it will get used to sucking on its thumb.

A toddler’s need to suck on something is usually satisfied within several minutes. Provide the pacifier for brief periods of time and then take it away. Give the child the pacifier only when you are certain that this is the specific item demanded. If the child needs comfort, it will be better to provide a hug rather than a pacifier.

Try to take the pacifier out of your toddler’s mouth, once the child falls asleep. Most children spit the pacifier after 15 to 20 minutes of deep sleep. If the child wakes up, leave the pacifier. Otherwise, your toddler will experience sleeping problems in an attempt to protect the favorite comforting item.

Many children demand their pacifier whenever they are bored or strictly on habitual grounds. In such instances, play with the child and do your best to keep your toddler entertained and happy.

Get rid of the pacifier all together. This might be very difficult in the beginning but for many toddlers, the strategy is more efficient than a gradual approach.

Use a simple trick. Make the pacifier boring. Use a pin to pierce it. When the air goes out of it, the child will no longer enjoy sucking on the pacifier. Ask a friend to dress as the Pacifier Fairy and to take away your toddler’s pacifier, providing in return a wonderful gift.

Be patient and gentle with your child. Stopping the usage of the pacifier should not turn into a traumatizing experience. Comfort your child and provide entertainment that will make the transition easier.

Keeping The Cost Down For The New Baby

Baby cribs can be very expensive depending on the model that you are looking at. Since the baby will only use it for a year or two it may not be worth it to invest in. Some people just can’t afford that expense so they look for used cribs. You want to make sure you are getting something very safe. Older models of cribs may have lead paint on them that is harmful to children. Check that the spacing between the slats isn’t going to be a risk for them either.

Not all used cribs out there though are old so don’t let that discourage you. Many parents want to get rid of them after their child moves into a toddler bed. This may be their last baby or they don’t have any place to store it. You can get a used crib that is in excellent condition from yard sales, consignment stores, and second hand shops. You can also look in the newspaper for such items for sale.

Chances are you may have a friend or family member with a used crib in storage that they will give to you, lend to you, or sale to you. This can be a great way to get the crib you need for a price you can afford. It is a good idea to go online and look at the safety rating for any used crib. This way you can find out if it is right for your baby. Register online for information to be sent to you about any recalls for that product as well.

It is a good idea to look at used cribs early in the pregnancy. This way if you discover any parts are missing you can contact the manufacturer to get them before your baby arrives. You will also have time to sand down the used crib and paint it if you want to. Being prepared for the baby with the crib is important as they will need it as soon as they come home.

You may find you need to buy a mattress though when you purchase a used crib. This is because the mattress that was in it can be transferred to the toddler bed for the child. Most parents will be using it. You can buy a new mattress for the crib though for about $30 so you won’t have to invest very much in it.

Everything changes when a parent has a baby or a toddler and that means being prepared no matter where you go. Many children in this age group still want to take naps at various times in the day. Carrying a portable playpen with you can really make that process easier for you. Take it along with you when you visit family or friends that don’t have young children. This way you don’t have to worry about your child falling off of a full sized bed.

Many parents find having a portable playpen when they stay at a motel is very convenient too. Everyone will get a better night of sleep because you won’t be worried about your baby. It is too risky to have them sleeping on a regular bed. Not all motel rooms have beds against the wall either so don’t take a risk.

It is a good idea to have a portable playpen at your home if you get visitors with young children. It will help everyone to feel more comfortable in your home. You will be confident that the young child is safe. It can also mean your guests will stay longer because they can visit while their child is resting comfortably.

Most portable playpens fold up very small so they aren’t going to take up very much room to store. They pop up very easily and most have a snapping action on the sides that hold it into place in a locked position. This means the playpen isn’t going to collapse with the child in it.

You can use portable playpens outdoors too. I have seen people using them at the drive in, while camping, and at sporting events. Some of them feature netting that goes over the top so that your child is guarded from mosquitoes and other insects as well. It can really be helpful to parents to have a portable playpen available.

There are many brands and models for you to choose from. You can pick up one that is well built as well as comfortable for about $60. This can be a great gift to give someone you know who is going to have a baby. They will get plenty of use out of it.http://www.troublesleepingbaby.com http://www.ohbabyshower.net

Baby Crib Advice and Tips

Congratulations!  You have just learned that you are having a baby.  Whether this is your first or not you need to look at cribs.  Do you have one already?  Is it an antique?  A second hand crib whether antique or not needs to be carefully looked at.  This is for the safety of your new baby.

The screws, bolts, and/or other fasteners should all be in place. Are they loose?  Will the position of the mattress hold under your baby’s weight? It is imperative that this be tested before you put your baby in the crib. Take something that approximates the weight of your baby at about 4 months old.  Bounce it off the mattress to be certain it will hold its position. If it doesn’t it could cause serious injury to your baby or worse.

When setting up the nursery (if it isn’t already up) consider very carefully where you will place the crib.  If you place the crib near a window and you have Venetian blinds, either shorten the cords or anchor them somewhere that your baby can’t reach and get a hold of them.  If it all possible avoid placing the crib near the window. As your baby grows into a toddler and s/he attempts to climb out of the crib; s/he could possibly fall which could cause serious injury to your baby.

Blankets and your baby are not necessarily a good mix. With the incidents of SIDS today, you want to be sure to do everything that could possibly put your infant at risk.  It is more advisable to put your baby to bed in a sleeper. If you absolutely have to have a blanket on the baby, tuck it tightly around and under the foot of the mattress with your baby’s feet touching the footboard.  Also you don’t want to put the blanket any higher on the baby than up to his chest as that will help prevent him from slipping under the blankets and suffocating.

Bumper pads are a great concept but unless they are secured properly, there is a risk of your baby slipping between the mattress and the bumpers and possibly suffocating.  If you use them they should be anchored in at least eight places one at each corner of the crib and at least two spaced evenly on each of the sides. There should be a total of 16 ties in all, for the top and bottom.

Mobiles are a nice addition and look adorable but… the caution here is that if you use a mobile as soon as your baby starts to sit up on his own the mobile should be taken down to prevent your baby from getting tangled in it. Also make sure that it has no small removable parts that your baby could choke on.
If your crib is second hand no matter whether you had for a previous child or you got it from someone else check out the mattress carefully. Make sure there are no cracks or holes in the mattress covering. Make sure too that the mattress properly fits in the crib. Here again, your child could slip between the mattress and the sidebars or the end boards and suffocate.  The mattress should fit snugly in the crib.  Now the sheets you use in your baby’s crib should also fit properly and not slip and slide.  Sheet anchors are available that hook on the sheet under the mattress and keep it in place.

The position of the mattress is imperative for your child’s safety. Most parents put the mattress at the highest position when the baby first comes home because it is so much easier to change him in that position. As your baby becomes more active you will want to lower the mattress accordingly. Once your baby is able to pull up to a standing position put the mattress in the lowest possible position and to be sure your baby is safe, measure the distance between the top of the side bar and the mattress.  In the lowest position the distance of the top of the side bar should be no more than 26 inches above the mattress.  If your child’s head is over the side bar or they climb out of the crib, it maybe time to move your child to a regular bed. Some cribs are convertible into beds tat will grow with your child.

The crib itself should be looked over for things that might put your baby at risk. Have you seen those cribs that have ornate designs carved into the end boards?  They are beautiful but they pose a danger to your child. Your child could get his head or arm and leg caught and sustain an injury. The simpler the design of the crib the safer your child may be.

Since approximately 1974 federal safety guidelines for cribs state that the slats should be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart. This is to prevent your baby from getting his head stuck between the slats.  This could cause injury to your baby but it would necessitate the removal of some of the slats and that alone would compromise your baby’s safety.

Advantages of nannies

All working parents know what it is like to have a small child wake up with a temperature, with all the warning signs of a potentially significant illness. Quite apart from your understandable concern about your child, you have that horrid ‘back of the mind’ thought of “what am I going to do about work today?”

If you have a nanny then this is one stress that you can avoid, as nannies unlike childminders, will continue to look after your child when they are ill. As the nanny cares for your child in your home there is no worry about taking a feverish child out in the cold or knowing that the nursery is going to refuse to take them because of the risk of other children catching something unpleasant.

For many parents this is the biggest advantage of a nanny over other types of childcare as even when their child is ill and miserable they will still be happy to be left with their familiar nanny. The only drawback could be that your child will be so well cared for it could be tempted by malingering, but an experienced nanny will stop anything of this sort before it can develop.

In case you have been wondering about having a nanny, either because you  don’t know how to find a nanny or are worried about the tax and National Insurance side of things, you can be reassured that there are people to help you . Nanny Wage Ltd. is a great contact site for nanny jobs; it is somewhere you can find a good nanny. We will take on all the legal employment requirements so you know you are complying with the law. Once you find a nanny to your specification and your child is settled with them, you can relax whether your child has a slight temperature or not.

In addition to the baby bassinet mattress , baby bassinets also have many other parts, including the product’s external shell, the structure or the chassis of the bassinet, as well as a canopy, which is also called the hood of the product. A good bassinet must have everything and includes a sturdy frame, a body that is free of undue protrusions, a canopy that can be easily folded down, like that of a convertible, and a baby bassinet mattress.

You have the option of purchasing linens, pillows, mattresses and other accessories on your own, though they will likely come with the baby bassinet itself. You will still need to replace the baby bassinet mattress from time to time, however. Frankly, it is a good idea to get an extra baby bassinet mattress.

Whatever the case, ensure the following when you are planning to get a baby bassinet mattress.

v While you need to ensure that the surface of the baby bassinet mattress is firm so that the baby can be supported, it should not be so hard that the baby feels uncomfortable while sleeping. In fact, if a baby bassinet mattress is not firm enough, the baby can sink inside too much, and consequently there can be breathing problems or even suffocation.
Apart from being ideal for the baby, you can clean these mattresses with greater ease too. They also are germ-repellant, and do not run the risk of having bacteria. These organic bassinet mattresses are made of fire proof natural substances as well.
v Another issue that is extremely pertinent in this context is, whether the baby bassinet mattress fits well or not. Too snug of a fit will make sheet changing a difficult chore, and a loose fit may not be safe for the baby.
v Ideally, you should also purchase the mattress cover while you are buying the baby bassinet mattress.
v It is not at all necessary that the makers of the bassinet and the baby bassinet mattress are the same.

A brand new soft baby bassinet mattress is sure to be pleasing for your baby. Loving and caring parents want to do everything for their new-born children and getting a bassinet and/or mattress remains high in their list of priorities. If you want your baby to sleep comfortably, you will want to get a new baby bassinet mattress.

Get the complete information about your baby bassinet mattress. The new baby bassinet and mattress are sure to make your baby happy.
