Diaper cakes are a perfect gift idea because they provide mom and baby with much needed supplies while still allowing you to add a little originality and creativity. Combine your imagination with the party theme or nursery color scheme, add in a few extra special accessories, and you will have a gift that will thrill the mom or mom-to-be, and be remembered for years to come. In fact, pictures of these stunning creations are guaranteed an honored place in the pages of every family’s memory scrapbook.

Choosing a Diaper Cake Color Scheme:

In addition to diapers, your cake will likely include other items for the new baby’s room such as blankets, stuffed animals, or picture frames. Choosing a color scheme or theme that matches the nursery will ensure that your thoughtful gifts are both useful and complementary to the décor.

You may also choose the color based on the new baby’s gender or select a neutral tone that is appropriate for either a boy or girl and will fit well with any decorating style.

Cover your cake in a blanket of icing using a bath towel, quilt, or crib sheet that matches your chosen color scheme. Add complementary ribbon such as pink for a girl, blue for a boy, yellow for a Winnie-the-Pooh nursery, or green for a jungle themed room. Complete your creation with matching flowers or accessories.

Choosing the Perfect Shape for Your Diaper Cake:

Although it requires a little extra time, you can make your cake truly unique by designing creative shapes that will have guests begging for your ‘recipe’. Elegant tiered cakes, stacked atop one another or separated by pedestals add class and sophistication to a very practical gift. Ice with receiving blankets and colorful sprinkles of pacifiers, baby socks, rattles, and stuffed animals.

Make a bassinet pattern from cardboard, use a ribbon to securely cover the outside with diapers, and fill the inside with baby items such as oil, powder, face cloths, and onesies. A baby blanket makes a great hood, and you can even transform your creation into a carriage by rolling additional diapers into wheels and adding a handle made from wire covered with washcloths or towels.

Cover the outside of a bushel basket with rolled diapers, line the bottom with baby blankets or crib sheets, and set a pair of large stuffed animals, rag dolls, or plush superheros inside. Make a boat pattern using diapers for the base and a washcloth for a sail. Of course, a stuffed teddy will make a great captain. Or, turn your boat into a Noah’s ark, adding in a twig ladder and pairs of animals. If you have the time and inclination you can even make Noah’s creatures yourself using baby washcloths and socks.

For a winter baby, use diapers to make a snowman from three different sized diaper rolls stacked on top of each other. Cover with white towels, add a scarf and hat, attach eyes and even a carrot nose – made from an orange wash cloth, of course! Wrap ribbon between each layer or glue buttons down the front to complete your personalized “Frosty”.

Are you expecting a little princess. Design a pink diaper castle. Welcoming a rambunctious little boy? Why not create a diaper tricycle? Or, make a platter of mini-cakes using individual diapers rolled and placed in cupcake containers.

Choosing Your Diaper Cake Accessories:

While diapers provide the base of your creation, it is the accessories that add the unique and personal touches. Welcome a little girl with a princess cake topped with a magic wand and bejeweled crown. Or, introduce the new addition to the excitement of tea parties by attaching mini cups, saucers, and teapots.

Follow a Winnie-the-Pooh theme by choosing Pooh covered items such as pacifiers, rattles, and socks. You could even have a plush Pooh climbing the side of your cake in an attempt to reach a bouncy Tigger perched at the top.

Are you welcoming a Christmas baby? Wrap your diaper cake in holly, top with a Santa hat, and include a special baby’s first Christmas ornament. Create a jungle themed cake by accessorizing with zebra print ribbon, jungle grasses, palm trees, and jungle animals. As an added touch, include a swinging monkey or a tree house.

By making diaper cakes you can give a unique and useful gift that can be customized to any theme and will receive top marks for presentation and creativity. And, for an eco-friendly option, you can even substitute cloth diapers for disposable ones and please the environmentally conscious mother-to-be.

Winter is hard on everyone, but especially your little ones. If you are like most parents, you are constantly fretting about whether or not they are warm enough or if you are protecting them from all the germs that make winter especially nasty. Well, have no fear! Here is a list of the top 10 baby must haves every parent needs to ensure that their little one has a safe and happy winter.

Snowsuit or heavy bunting. When it comes to the coldest days, heavy blankets just don’t do the trick. You need to invest in one or both to keep the warm not just outside, but also snug in their car seat. A lot of buntings even come with a hole that makes buckling it into your child’s car seat user-friendly.

Car seat cover. These are really only good for newborns, but if you have a newborn you will learn that it’s a real lifesaver. They fit securely around your child’s car seat and they provide a cozy environment that also protects them from the elements.

Hats and mittens. Ear infections are rampant among babies in the wintertime, because parents don’t keep their ears covered well enough. Don’t just rely on the hood on their coat to keep those little ears protected, you need to invest in a hat that pulls down snuggly, but comfortably over their ears and stays put! Mittens are also a must to protect tiny fingers from the winter chill. If you have an older baby, you might consider mittens with fingers that make grasping easier and mittens less frustrating.

Those lightweight receiving blankets you loved all summer are out now that the nights and days are a lot colder. You need to invest in several heavy fabric blankets that will make keeping your little one warm much easier.

Long-sleeved and short-sleeved t-shirts. These are great for layering and adding extra warmth to your little one.

Footed pajamas-preferably in fleece. These are what you need to keep your little one extra warm on those cold winter nights, especially since most babies don’t stay covered up if you do use blankets. These should also keep you from over-bundling your baby, which is dangerous because they can overheat.

Baby lotion. If you don’t lotion your baby, you will want to during the winter months. Winter air is dry and can cause your baby to have dry, itchy skin. Moisturizing your baby will help to protect your little ones skin.

Baby first aid kit. This is where you stock up on all your baby care essential so that if your little one comes down with a fever in the middle of the night, you don’t have to send your exhausted spouse out for anything. Your baby first aid kit should include: baby strength Tylenol, baby strength ibuprofen, baby Vick’s vapor rub, suction bulb for little noses, extra soft tissues, thermometer, and Mylecon (for gassy tummy’s). You can tailor your first aid kit to fit your child’s individual needs, just be sure that you have one.

Humidifier. Unfortunately for infants there really isn’t a lot you can do for them when they get a nasty cold. The best way to fight a cold for your infant is to prevent one. The best way to prevent one is to ward off dry winter air with a humidifier. Either a warm air or cool air, both should get the job done.

A car emergency kit. This is especially important if you travel a lot, but is a good idea even if you only live minutes from town. You never know when a disaster might happen. You car emergency kit should be well equipped for you and for your baby. It should include things like warm blankets for you and baby, as well as extra coats, mittens, and scarves. You should also include things like non-perishable food items like crackers, beef jerky, granola bars, etc. and for your baby you should have a can or two of formula, a bottle, and if your baby takes baby food, you could include a couple jars of baby food. You will also want to keep a jug or two of purified water in your trunk. You will want to make sure you have a flash light, maybe a flair gun, and possibly a hand-powered charger for your cell phone. After you have to kit all together, be sure that it is an easily accessible place in your car. There is no such thing as being too prepared.

When a baby is born, traditionally we give the baby and his or her parents gifts to celebrate the birth. This can be done at a baby shower, which is often held at a restaurant or in the home of one of the mother’s friends, or the gift can be given as a special surprise for the mother without any party.

Often the baby shower has a theme for the presents, usually planned in coordination with the mother and her needs. Sometimes, the giver can be part of a “group gift” for the baby newborn boy or girl, and go in with other people at the church or workplace to buy the family a more expensive present, one that is more expensive than anyone wants to buy alone.

Practical Gifts

One type of gift are the practical gifts. This would include things like diapers (whether disposable or the “new” trend – cloth) and diaper covers, practical clothing like undershirts, sleepers, and other necessary items, receiving blankets and larger ones, and anything else the mother has expressed an interest in receiving, like a sling or diaper bag.

Newborn Baby Gifts That Pamper

Pampering gifts are the type that the mother and father probably wouldn’t buy on their own, but they would love to have. These include things like diaper service for a month or two, and very fancy clothing for the newborn.

Something that is very popular now is to give newborn baby gifts that are personalized. Almost any present can be turned into a personalized gift – there are many websites and companies that will add a name to a blanket, bib, towel, etc. Imagine the thrill for a mother as she opens your gift to find her baby’s name on the satin binding of a blanket!

Suggested Gifts For Mom!

Mom could use a bit of pampering after her hard work. A gift for mom could be a massage or getting her nails done. Mom may appreciate a book she’s had her eye on, which she can read while she’s breastfeeding the baby. Or it could be a scrapbook made from pregnancy photos documenting her journey into motherhood. Note that the best newborn baby gifts for mom aren’t ones that take her away from her newborn, but ones she can enjoy while the babe is asleep or contented in a auntie’s arms.

What About Gifts For Dad?

What would dad like when he’s got a newborn? Many dads enjoy getting regular meals – and when mom’s busy with her newborn baby, a gift can be bringing in meals to the family.
