Finding the Right Baby Crib Bedding

Imagine that you are pregnant and are due in just a few weeks. You have purchased everything your baby will need except for the perfect baby bedding set. Why is this important? Because the look of baby crib bedding can turn an ordinary nursery into a fantasy land for your baby or toddler. These days, crib bed sets consist of more than just sheets and a blanket. Bumpers, toy bags, diaper stackers, stuffed animals, and pillows are just a few of the accessories that can be added to these nursery accessories. Here are some questions you should ask yourself before beginning to shop for the perfect crib bedding for your little one.

What’s your nursery’s theme?

Do you have an ongoing theme for your nursery? If so, then your infant crib bedding should match. For example, if you are using a safari-theme, then your bedding set should also have a safari-theme. Even if you are planning on only using solid colors, there are plenty of bedding sets for infants available that would match your criteria.

What crib design was chosen?

cribs used to only have a square-shape, but now comes in several unique designs, including rounded and custom shapes. Some infant crib bedding sets come in a variety of shapes, while others don’t. However, many crib sets can be custom-ordered to fit your needs.

What is the thread count?

Especially for newborns, having soft bedding is important because stiff, scratchy bedding for infants can irritate their delicate skin. You may have to pay a little more for quality crib sets that are soft against their skin. For example, the Animal Fair bedding set from Bebe Chic is top-of-the-line and will make it easy for your child to rest.

You may be thinking that there is no sense in spending a lot of time looking at different baby crib bedding since your child won’t use it for long. The truth is your baby will most likely use it for at least a year, so quality is key as you are picking out the right products for your child. Finding a baby boutique who will be able to work with your specifications is a must in order to get the right bedding for your little one.

When it comes to having a child, every moment counts. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the development of the baby in the mummy’s tummy, or having to prepare clothing for the newborns day of arrival, there is always something happening and in need of preparation during the first 9 months of your child’s development. Whether it’s your first child or your tenth though, there are things you need to acquire and prepare for that should already be in place by the time you take your newborn home from the hospital. Planning ahead is ideal to playing catch-up, because when the baby is here, one of the last things you really want to have to do is have to scurry around town trying to find the things you should have already bought for your baby’s needs. Being prepared will leave you with a sense of comfort that brings incomparable joy, compared to those that wait until the last minute.

When preparing for a baby there are various things that you typically want to purchase. First of all, you want to make sure you have hygiene items and clothing. Nappies, baby powder, thermometer and bottles are all hygiene items that you will typically need. As far as clothing goes, mittens, shirts, pants, booties, socks and hats are all applicable. There are some larger considerations to take into account as well though.

You’ll need sleeping space for your baby, either a crib, hammock or something that will give them their own space. A Moses basket (or bassinet) is truly ideal. It provides a safe, relaxing environment for your baby that’s free from disturbance. Small babies are particularly fond of these because they are small and give them a sense of security, as if in the womb. It’s also believed that by using these you can help avoid “sudden infant death syndrome”. Though there has been no one particular cause found for SID, it is strongly believed based on studies that soft bedding may well be a factor in it and a Moses bed is designed in mind with all your baby needs.

In addition to the hygiene items, the clothes and the bedding for your baby, you’re also going to need a stroller. There are baby packs that you can strap on and carry your baby around in as you shop and move around town, but getting around with your baby in these can eventually be a gruelling task for some mums. Especially if you’re not used to having to carry additional loads. There are some amazing strollers that can fulfil your need though and make travelling a dream.

Some of these strollers (or pushchairs) come in some pretty hip colours, and even some pretty stylish designs. From zebra print fabrics to vogue style designs, today’s strollers are one of a parent’s best-friend, especially if you’re one that’s often out and about. Take a look for some with a fleecy baby’s nest, cup-holders, harness pads, ventilated rain-cover, shopping baskets and carry handles. Adding one of these to your final list of baby items is just like adding icing to the cake.

The advice on breastfeeding seems to flow thick and fast. Please forgive the pun. Some advice is often quite prescriptive; particularly to new mothers in the beginning, from well intentioned and busy midwives. Often the best advice comes from other Mums who have been there recently and learnt from their experience. Forums such as ‘mumsnet’ are often invaluable sources of frank and honest advice. If you read just some of the posts, the main thread of advice that comes through is; relax, take the prescriptive advice with a pinch of salt, let baby take the lead a bit and don’t get stress about it! After all, the alternative is far from the end of the world!

It is important to know that babies are individuals. They may have slightly different feeding patterns, or yours may have a bigger appetite than others! Newborns can cluster feed in the evenings. Feeding all night for the first few weeks doesn’t mean they’ve got night and day mixed up and is actually not to bad a situation, because night is when levels of hormones are higher and it helps get breastfeeding established. Also, wear a sleeping bra, but make sure it isn’t too tight or you could end up with mastitis.

One of the main initial problems women encounter when breastfeeding is ‘latching on’. There are many sources of advice on this, not least your midwife, and it is wise to establish that the baby is latched on properly and is getting milk before you leave the hospital. If you are unsure what you are doing is working, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion.  Another great source of advice about latching on is on the Dr Jack Newman website.

Then comes the issue of feeding in public. After all, baby does not know when you are meeting a friend for coffee or sat in the doctor’s waiting room waiting for a check up. This can be another substantial source of anxiety and another reason why mums choose to stop early on.

This need not be the case though. It is virtually impossible to organize your life around feeding times and therefore it is best to be more relaxed about it and just be prepared.  There are many products available that can assist mums (and their babies) to gain confidence in the early days of breastfeeding in public. The breastfeeding cover (or apron) is one such product. These covers can work well throughout your days of breastfeeding in public, particularly as baby gets older and is more prone to distraction. The breastfeeding cover / apron creates a nice cocooned environment for you both.  This way, if you do feel a little self conscious when breastfeeding in public, you can cover up using an apron.  Many mothers use cloths but this tends to not be as comfortable for the baby, and as a mother, you lose eye contact with the baby and can’t check as easily whether they are feeding well.

Advice comes from all directions when you are a new mum, and much of it seems contradictory.  It can be a great strain when you are worried about doing the right thing.  Probably the best advice is to listen but in the end, judge what seems to be right for your baby.

My Personal Review OnFisher-Price Newborn Rock ‘n Play Sleeper

Great at first, but be careful I am a mom for the second time and just bought this for my newborn son. I fell in love instantly. It is lightweight, portable baby to sleep as soon as I put in it. My baby naps and slept at night in this bed. It worked like a dream, like all other reviewers say. We have used this product exclusively for sleeping, and says right on the table – “approved for sleep.”

Everything was fine until my son was 2 months old. I noticed that the head tended to fall to one side in particular and neck strength was not progressing as well as it should. He was also beginning to develop a flat spot on the right side of his head, where the angles in bed. Can not tell from the picture, but this bed has a hard flat support under the padding. This angle drive support inward all the way up both sides of the bed. Because the bed is tilted, these angle brackets difficult to provide a place for a newborn to rest the head or to the right or left. This drive is compatible also cause an infant to fall back towards the inside – not great for the baby to rapidly develop the muscles of the neck and shoulder.

My son is 2 months checkup, was diagnosed with a mild torticollis on the right side (short / tight neck muscles) and the beginnings of plagiocephaly (flat head). He is now 3 months old and in physical therapy weekly. We hope you will not have to get a helmet. I only used this product for sleep, but for a newborn, a 14 to 18 hours per day.

If you receive this product, I pay special attention to your baby’s shoulders, neck and head placement. Run your fingers along the back of the fill and feel, where it is difficult and angles inward on both sides. Is it pushing on the shoulders of his son? Does your child’s head lean over to one side? Use your best judgment. Perhaps the occasional use as a seat would be nice, but no child should spend all their hours of sleep in this widget. I just bothers me that it took two months to figure that out.

Most stars 5 reviews were written in the first days or weeks to have the product. It would be interesting to see how many of those same children are having problems with neck and head …

This is a relatively new product. I truly believe that end reclassified as an infant seat in place of a bed. Please be careful, do not make the same mistake we did.

What is Colic in Newborns

Colic is so common among infants that a lot of people are not surprised anymore if it occurs. Still, for the first time mother it may be a harrowing and panicking experience particularly with her usually quiet angel screaming non-stop from the background. It is frequently manifested at about 2  to 3 weeks of age. It will become more prominent in the first two months and subsides at three months old. Colic totally stops at roughly three-and-a-half to four months of age.

Colic is usually not so dangerous. It might seem so though from the way newborns will wail and scream at the top of their lungs. In reality, it may be so frequent that parents may suffer an episode every day; and after the first episode, mother and father usually learn to deal with succeeding ones with aplomb. Still, physicians and scientists cannot pinpoint    just what exactly causes colic. It just comes about.

Colic, to those who are not knowledgeable about the problem, is really a belly ache that happens after eating. As a result of the continual ache, newborns bawl for hours and hours until the colic is relieved. Crying may persist for about one to 4 hours, based around the severity of the ache. Babies’ cheeks may also become red through the exertion and maybe the ache.

If there is colic, the tummy of the infant may become bloated or can become enlarged. One leg will be bent while the other will extended straight out. The feet will become cold and the hands clenched tight because of the pain. This is generally a typical reaction for people whose stomachs hurt them.

Oftentimes, it’ll occur late in the afternoon or early during the evening following every meal. It could though also come about any time of the day. Not all babies suffer the pain of colic and some even suffer less frequent than others. Doctors believe that genetics play a role. It seems that if one or both parents have suffered from colic when they were babies, their children may also suffer colic episodes.

Nonetheless, you will discover situations that may aggravate a colic condition in babies. Below are some of them. Read on so that you can evade these factors and prevent your infant from additional pain.

1. Overfeeding can only aggravate the situations if you possess a colicky baby inside your arms. Ensure that your newborn is suffering from hunger and not colic before you give food to him again.

2. There are specific foods that will worsen the colic. Those with high sugar content, those with full strength juice will only increase the gas inside the belly and as a result, aggravate the situation.

3. Intestinal sensitivity may cause colic so it is necessary for moms to know just what makes their babies allergic. It may be from something that they’ve directly eaten or something that you passed on through the milk within your breasts.

4. Intense emotions may also influence colic. Feelings such as anger, panic, worry and excitement must be avoided as this will only worsen the pain for the infant.

Although there isn’t a cure for colic in babies, there are some things you may try to help to reduce the ache including walking and padding or rubbing the newborn’s back and giving him/her a product often known as “gripe water” for newborns. There are a variety of commercial versions of gripe water available so the particular content may vary between brand names, but usually gripe water consists of ginger, fennel, sodium bicarbonate, fructose and 3.6 percent alcohol, along with dill and chamomile. All these ingredients have components that help to reduce cramping, gas and stomach acidity, plus the dill actually may also help soothe the infant and lull them to sleep.

The best way to help your baby would be to first not panic, because as previously pointed out your emotional response to the situation can make things even worse. Next step is to get more informed on what you are dealing with with respect to colic in babies and to brush up as much as possible even before an episode. Nonstop crying could be a result of a host of other things so it is important that you also keep your eyes open so that you’ll know what precisely ails your infant. Keep in mind that there is no recognized cause; so there is also no known cure for it except to make the incident as comfortable and less distressing as possible for both you and your baby.

It’s important to realise that not only babies develop at the same rate. Some develop right on time, whilst others are faster or slower. When babies develop they develop in their own time – not by anyone else’s schedule! So before you worry, like any parent about your child’s development, bear in mind to acknowledge the development stages without over worrying.

A newborn baby mostly sleeps, eats and does the other necessary things. It’s important that mothers remain very close to their newborns during this period as they have very sensitive skin and like to be close to the warm soft skin of their mothers. It helps to bond you with baby as well as make him/her comfortable. Already their hearing, taste and smell is highly developed but as yet their eyesight is too. Expect in this month your baby just to get use to living.

From being a sleepy fellow, your baby will then learn to react. Eyesight will begin to improve and he/she will start curling/uncurling the fists, holding feet, moving muscles and generally squirming. She/he may start smiling; making short noises and lifting his/her head for brief periods to engage with the world around him.

At around 2 months he/she should have acquired the above skills and should be gaining more control of hand movement etc. Drooling, rolling (not necessary all the way round) and more active movements such as kicking are regular practice at 2 months onwards.

At around month 3, baby’s hand-eye coordination should begin to improve, readying him for the next skills. At this stage, baby should be opening up to the idea of other people as well as understanding that you are his closest loved ones. Legs may also be preparing for standing. You may find them getting stronger and straightening out.

Month 4 is where a baby may learn to coordinate himself to grab items with fingers. His/her coordination should with practice improved over the last few months. Baby will also start to play with his/her movement, even being able to grab a foot with his/her hand. Baby should in terms of language development be still playing around, experimenting with sounds, particularly vowels and consonants.

Month 5 is often a new and exciting month for baby, as they begin to want to participate in more activities. This often means that baby has trouble with being alone for long periods of time and needs more attention. It’s a simple matter baby wants to start to discover – and he does in this month – as he begins to fully roll over, grasp items with a full hand and starts the initial steps towards crawling (supporting himself on his hands). Baby also wants to be with people, often meaning he/she will cry when you move out of sight. However, baby does often become more reserved with strangers, more and more so as the months go on.

At the big 6 months mark, most babies can fully roll over, begin to react to objects and start to try to sit up. At this stage babies start to develop reactions, realising when an object is in a different area or they have dropped it. They also begin to develop further reflexes, including putting arms out to soften a fall. Although these may not be fully developed, baby may still be working towards them, as some of these skills are not always fully developed till around 9 months.

Caring Of Newborn Baby

Skin care is the first factor in spite of its adaptability to new environment. The skin is red, which he offers to irritation and infection with each contact. So it is best to wash clothes with special cleaning agents. Baby’s skin loses moisture quickly and it takes its time to absorb and retain moisture to his needs.

For nine months your baby was protected in your womb; wrapped up in a cocoon of Mother Nature’s love. The transition to the real world, during birth, was a traumatic experience for the developing little human in your life. Your maternal instincts likely told you to wrap your baby up in comforting fabrics; to hold them close so to you so they could hear your heartbeat; to give them all the love and shelter you possibly could.

Newborn babies can be quite intimidating. It’s one of life’s funny ironies that a fully-grown adult can actually fear the delicate, fragile, tiny frames newborns come in. What happens if you don’t support their heads just right? Or know just how much pressure to apply when burping them? Or how to avoid causing them pain when dressing them in their miniature clothes? There are many things to learn as a new parent, no doubt about it. But getting the basics right can be easy. A newborn baby does three things: eat, sleep and excrete. Once you’ve got feeding and changing down, there’s just one thing left to figure out: baby’s bed.

Many people get excited and choose impractical cots and beds for their baby, not fully understanding just how tiny a space they are going to occupy. If a newborn wants anything, it is the feeling of physical contact. How can a baby enjoy this feeling in a spacious bed? The solution is the bassinet : the long-time bed of choice for the newborn baby. The bassinet is designed to be snug, like the womb, so a baby can feel protected or ‘cocooned’ as it does in the womb.

There are many different styles of baby bassinets to suit the parent’s taste and baby’s gender and size. The only crucial aspect when choosing a bed is to chose the correct design, such as the bassinet – and the correct fabric. Babies have sensitive skin. Always do your research when choosing bed clothes for baby, ensuring the fabrics are not made from materials your baby may find irritating.

Many concerns come to the mind of a newborns parent. One of the largest concerns on any new parents mind is the comfort of their child when they return home from the hospital. The most important time to make sure that your child is comfortable and warm is during the night hours when the parents are sleeping and therefore can’t keep a constant watch on the baby.

Normal bedding systems have proven to work OK but not exceptional which always leaves some worry in the back of a new parents mind. There exists a form of bedding which can relieve all worries about your child’s comfort during all hours of the day and night. Merino baby sleep bags are the best bet for a number of reasons.

It can take a newborn up to a year to develop the ability to regulate their body temperature. This means that with just a small change in temperature your child can be left cold or even worse over heating. Over heating is one of the known culprits of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Merino is a natural insulator, it will hold heat and circulate it keeping the babies body warm and it also has the ability to release excess heat and wick moisture away from the body. So in any situation you newborn will be comfortable, dry and safe.

Many cases still remain where there is no explanation for SIDS related deaths but there are studies showing that 25% of babies who suffer from SIDS are found with a blanket covering their face. The baby sleep sack design allows your child to be comfortably covered with out the risk of getting tangled in a blanket when moving around during sleep.

Ultimately the best sleep garment for any newborn is a combination of both merino and the baby sleep sack. This combination will reduce the risks involved with SIDS and this will give new parents the confidence they need that there child will be safe through the night.

Merino Kids has designed the perfect product with comfort being the forefront of there design. The inside of the Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag is made from the softest merino wool and the outside is constructed of soft and durable cotton. You can find these products on the web at babysleepbags.com for the USA and babysleepbags.co.uk for the rest of the northern hemisphere and Europe.

Francis Frost is the owner of Module Marketing in Auckland New Zealand. He is the new father of a 21 week old boy and an advocate of using merino and baby sleep sacks, especially the Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag.
With its award winning design, merino fabric and outstanding function the Merino Kids baby sleep sack is second to none.
