Your Baby is unique, and will naturally develop all the skills she requires, at her own pace. I don’t believe in potty ‘training,’ and my own children gained control over their bowels at different ages, and do you know what? Neither my wife or I were particularly worried. There is only one way to go about the subject of bowel and bladder control, and that is to let your child decide when she is ready, and not try to rush her decision. With our three children, we have never used a potty, but we got a toilet seat reducer so that they could sit on the ‘big’ toilet like mum and dad. Here are some thoughts on the whole process of bowel control.

It is impossible to train a child unless her body has developed to the point where she can physically and mentally be able to perform the task. If you look at toilet training, this means that it is not possible for your child to control bowel movement unless the bowel muscles are strong enough to hold urine and faeces, and that at some given time an order is given from the brain, and the body can respond to that order. If this level of sophistication has not been reached then any training programme you have for potty training will fail. So at what age will this happen? There is no normal age and some children will achieve this extremely early, and some extremely late; but for the majority of toddlers it is somewhere in between. The best approach for you as a parent, is not to worry about it and to pass your fears onto your child.

If you insist on a toilet programme before your child is ready, then be prepared for tears and sadness, and your relationship with your child may suffer as you will be seen as a source of unhappiness. This very natural process will become a battleground which you can never win. Stay calm, chill out and just enjoy this stage of her development because believe me, you absolutely cannot make your baby pass a stool to order or keep her nappy dry if it is just not the right time, and please, do not shout if accidents occur, because this is an inevitability.

Being a parent is a fantastic job, but unfortunately there is no qualification you can take to become better. Use your common sense, don’t get worried that your best friend’s baby is now dry at night and using and flushing the toilet and your little boy is still in nappies. Don’t worry, he will be an adult and will have flown the nest soon enough; just enjoy your precious little gift, because he or she is as unique as you are.

How to deal with a baby with colic

Listening to a baby persistently crying is much more than just a parenting nuisance. Having to listen to the constant crying and the exhaustion associated with it can trigger much more serious problems, such as relationship stress, postnatal depression and much more.  So doing nothing about it and just putting up with it is not a good idea.

Colic is a common condition in which a baby cries or screams a lot more than normal.  But what is normal?  Well if your baby cries more often than not there is something not quite right. All babies cry as it’s their way of communicating to you. But if you have fed your baby, changed its nappy and done all the normal things but the baby still won’t stop crying then it probably has colic.

The cause of colic is not just one thing; it can refer to a variety of causes including stomach gas, intestinal gas, neurological overload and muscular spasms.  Symptoms are constant crying for hours without being able to sooth or comfort him or her.  The baby may arch his or her back, become stiff, clenches fists, and just in general look not very happy and being in some kind of pain.  A baby can get worked up from something to the point where neurological overload can take over.

The way to deal with colic will be different for each baby.  You want to start off by trying some basic techniques like walking or dancing around with your baby.  Taking the baby out for a drive in the car sometimes helps or a walk in the fresh air, the feeling of movement can help to settle babies with colic.

Some babies will benefit from a dummy.  Now not every mum will want their child to get into the habit of using a dummy but if it eases problems with colic it is worthwhile.  Dummies are easy to wean off when the child is older.

There are medicine about and some claim to improve the symptoms of colic but unless the doctor is completely sure the colic is down to wind for example, it is very hard for doctors to give out the right medicine.

An alternative method which is centuries of years old is baby massage. Baby massage has been a tradition in countries such as India for thousands of years.  Indian baby massage is more than that; it is their way of life.   Baby massage has many benefits for both mother and child but in regards to colic it helps to strengthen and regulate their digestive system including respiratory and circulatory systems.   Also massaging a baby helps to enhance the babies feeling of being loved and feeling secure which can relieves the symptoms of colic, wind and constipation.

So if your child is suffering from colic don’t despair, there are things you can try.  Some technique will work for some babies others technique will work for others.  It is just a matter of trial and error.  Your baby will grow out of this stage, not many babies past the age of 6 months suffer from colic. Talk to your health visitor or doctor is you’re concerned, but babies are tougher than you think and many conditions like colic are common in babies and soon pass.  Soon you will be worrying about something else!

Tips to a healthier baby

A baby is a bundle of a blessing from the Almighty. When a baby is born, parents are handled with such a lot of responsibility that requires a lot of monitoring and effort. Newborn babies sleep for almost 20 hours. This is the right time to grow. So, the nest time you find your baby sleeping, think it is always growing. A sound sleep is necessary for every baby though some people might say that babies are able to sleep in almost every environment. Make the home environment as pleasant as possible to get good results of your parenting.

Babies need food like all of us. Babies are fed at a specific time at regular intervals. The feeding practices have to be hygienic as much as possible. Breastfeeding for babies is a very efficient part of boosting up baby’s immunity. An immune baby will not catch diseases and have hours of peaceful sleep. Another effective health tip is massaging babies with lotions or oils. Massaging gives them a firm body structure and improves circulation of blood throughout the skin.

Bonding acts as a stimulus towards your baby. Playing, talking, singing a lullaby etc, will not only entertain your baby but also create an emotional bond with you and other family members. These activities stimulate the baby’s senses and gives a good health overall. Changing the baby’s nappy frequently is another proven activity. Diaper rashes arise when the diaper is a low quality one or even with long hours of usage of the same diaper. It is good to use lotions or creams before putting on a diaper. Baby Nursery Furniture

Baby nursery management is very important for the perfect functioning of the baby and the parents. While setting up a nursery for your baby, you have to take care of many things and one such thing is that your nursery should not be filled up by the furniture all around. So set up the nursery for your baby with the necessary furniture only in order to provide enough space to the baby for free movements.

There are many furniture stores and brands which are making furniture for the nurseries. But this does not mean that you are going to put the whole furniture in your nursery. Select and buy the important furniture only for your own convenience along with the convenience of your baby.

The furniture which must be present in your nursery includes crib as the center piece in your nursery. Cradles and bassinets are also important for your nursery. The availability of the changing table is a must in your nursery in order to facilitate the nappy and dress changing of your baby. To cope up with the feeding requirements of your baby, you must furnish your nursery with gliders.

Nursery bedding is very important to complete the crib and the most important thing while selecting bedding for your nursery is to keep in mind the comfort of the baby. The selection of themes for bedding is also very important as it will create the impression of your whole nursery. Comfort of bedding for the baby is determined by the quality of the mattress. You must choose mattress which is of high quality to facilitate the baby with maximum comfort. The choice of quilt is also important to complete the crib. So choose the quilt which has best quality. To protect the mattress of the crib from dirt you also need the sheets for the crib.

Do you really need a Baby Changing Station?

As a parent to be, its very easy to spend huge amounts of money on those essential pieces of nursery equipment which you think you will need to get you through those early days. But you really have to wonder how essential are ‘the essentials’? Parents with toddlers will be more than aware of just how much money is wasted on baby equipment which is supposed to simplify and ease the process of parenting but is in fact never really used!

Baby Changing Station

According to most parenting magazines, one of the ‘essential’ pieces of furniture which ‘every nursery should have’ is a changing station. Before you go running to your local baby shop or searching for the cheapest deal online to get yours, save yourself the hassle, cost and effort of buying, using and having a changing table and consider the following facts:

  • Changing your baby on an elevated surface can be dangerous. The SAFEST place to change your infant / toddler is at floor level.
  • A changing table / workstation can cost from £80 upwards depending whether you wish to have a basic table or one which matches with a particular theme / brand name.
  • A changing table takes up valuable room in your nursery / bathroom
  • A changing table is simply another surface which can harbour germs and needs to be cleaned regularly!

So what you essentially want is a baby changing mat / waterproof sheet / towel to lay your child upon comfortably (on the floor), a packet of wipes/ cotton wool and water and finally a clean nappy.

For simple storage simply tuck your changing mat under the cot or perhaps down the side of the sofa for ease and accessibility during the day.

baby changing mat

By simply using a changing mat on the floor you will find it is now more convenient to change your baby in any location as the mats are light and easy to transport. The price of a changing mat is fairly cheap and therefore you could even splurge and buy almost ten for the price of one changing table, that’s one for every room of the house and probably a few more for the car too!

If you are adamant that you must have a designated changing surface, then the best option has to be a baby cot top changer. It simply sits across the cot /cot bed forming a secure work surface. Please note that the cot top changer should have a safety buckle or strap which is secured to the top rail.

Baby Cot Top Changer

Unlike the changing station, the cot top changer can be stored away without taking up vast amounts of space and its a fraction of the price!

Save yourself from wasting the ‘real essentials’ (money, time, effort, space, safety risks and more) and don’t bother with a changing station!

Babies cry for many reasons. It is indeed essential to find out the exact reason why a child cries. Unless and until the reason of the cries are identified it is not always possible to calm down a baby.

It is indeed stressful to a baby and the parents if a baby cries. Thus it is necessary to identify and discover the secret language they speak out through their cries as they shed their tears. Some of the instructions to understand the cries of a baby are as follows:

  1. It is necessary to understand the fussy cry that generally occurs before a baby actually cries. This cry is fussy and reveals the cause that disturbs a baby and makes him/her hysterical as their demand does not get fulfilled. The cries try to reveal the cause of disturbance and convey the need of a child.
  2. The first cry of a child generally reveals hunger.
  3. The second cry describes or conveys that a child is sleepy. This cry is tied to the reflex related to the yawn.
  4. Thirdly, the cry narrates how uncomfortable a baby is. May be a bit more warmth or cold be the reason of the uncomfortability. May be there lies a situation to change the nappy of the child that irritates and initiates the cry in the baby.
  5. There is a fifth type of cry that generally conveys the secret language that the baby needs to burp. An effort to try to push air out of the stomach may fetch out a cry.
