How to Find and Choose a Baby Name

That is a massive question, and one that requires a carefully considered answer. Years before pregnancy, you’d probably have dreamt about different names for your pets and children. Whether you’re a man or a woman, you have names that you like and ones that you dislike.

The problem is indecisiveness, and that’s totally understandable when naming your new born because their name will be with them for life. So there’s a bit of pressure to make sure you’re totally one hundred percent happy with it, but this is totally normal and there’s so many different ways to find and choose the right name for your baby; here’s how:

Research

There are a plethora of baby books and websites out there, ready for anyone expecting a baby to get ideas for baby names. You may want to check for names that are more current and contemporary, if so then you should check online or ask your friends and family to determine the latest baby name trends.

On the other hand you may not want to choose the same name that everyone else is going for, just because it’s current. For example your child could turn up to school to see they are one of five Jordans or Dylans. Again you can search online for unusual and uncommon baby names, just to give you an idea.

Tradition

One way of choosing a name is to go along with tradition. For example if your middle name is the same name as your mother or fathers first name, then this tradition could be passed onto your children. That way you’ll find a suitable middle name for your child, whilst keeping it meaningful to your family.

This way could be used when deciding your child’s first name as well. For example, picking a name that you like in either your family or your partner’s family; whether that’s a sister, brother, mother, father, cousin, aunt or uncle. Conversely you may not like any existing family names and want to break away from tradition; again it’s entirely your choice.

Find the Origins of names

Another way of establishing a baby name is to understand what the name means and where it gets its origins from. If you’re particularly religious or spiritual this is a great way to pass on your beliefs to your children. Likewise if you’re from a particular heritage or culture, you may want to choose a name that is more meaningful to you, your beliefs or culture.

Finding the meaning of a name first can really help too. So say if there is a particular meaning that you are fond of, then you can choose the name accordingly. Again you can find the meaning of names in any good baby name book or well established and trusted website.

Favourite Person

If there is a special someone that you admire and like or if you’re a fan of then this is another way to pick a baby name. We’ve already touched on using existing family names, but it doesn’t have to stop there. If you’re particularly fond of someone, whether it’s a best friend, a sports star, film star or musician, then this may help when deciding on a name.

It’s your choice

Remember that when it comes to naming your baby, it’s yours and your partner’s decision. Whatever the type of name you choose, it’s important that you’re both totally one hundred percent happy with it. Take on board people’s suggestions by all means, research latest name trends, choose traditional names or existing family names, but make sure it’s what you want; otherwise you’ll regret the name you’ve chosen.

Just about every guy I know who has become a father like I have, has spoken to me about the feelings of elation that they had when they found out they were expecting. This is definitely a feeling that just about any guy cannot describe in words and it is really something you have to go through personally to fully understand the effect that it can have on you. The problem is that a lot of these feelings of joy and happiness start to fade after a while, as you are not only filled with a lot of doubts and worry about your own ability to be a parent, but you’ll soon see that there is a focus shifted onto your wife as she is pregnant. She becomes the focal point, and a lot of times as the father you’re going to feel left out during these long nine months, but this is only natural and you can change these feelings by the approach that you take.

Whenever you go to the doctor or midwife, all the questions are generally going to be directed at your wife, and whenever there is a baby shower, she is the one who is invited and not you. When you are out and about, and people notice your wife is pregnant, she again becomes the focal point, and you are generally left standing around feeling a little unnoticed. This also happens when you are around friends and family, especially as your wife gets into the latter stages of pregnancy, and just about everybody is bending over backwards to try and help her. Many guys eventually becoming jealous of this attention, as just about every person likes to have some form of attention, even if it is in a subtle manner.

However, the role of a father in the pregnancy is extremely important, and there are a number of things you can do to make it easy on your wife. First and foremost is you have to put your feelings of jealousy aside, and do everything you can to help her, as you have to realize she’s going through a great burden carrying your child. If there are dishes to be done or laundry that can be washed, then it is your job to finish these things. Your role is going to be as a caretaker and nurturer, and to help ease some of the burden on her, and reduce her stress levels. Keeping your wife relaxed and stress-free during her pregnancy, is easily the most important thing any new father can do for her, and your unborn child.

Tapping Into Experienced Parents Advice

Since my wife and I first had our daughter several years ago, we have been blessed to have so much help from many friends and family members along the way. I remember when I first found out my wife was pregnant, that I was ecstatic when she gave me the news. This feeling quickly drained out of my body the first time we went shopping for baby items, and I instantly had this overwhelming feeling come over me. I realized that there was going to be so much for me to not only buy, but learn as well. I had no idea what the best items we needed to get were, and in fact I had no idea what we even really needed for our baby. Of course, every new parent is faced with these type of obstacles in the beginning, and it is only natural as I later found out, that you worry like this.

I came to the realization that that my wife and I weren’t having this baby alone, as we had wonderful support system of our friends and family, who were more than willing to offer us advice and help, whenever we asked for it. For instance, my wife and I wanted to get a particular stroller, but it was extremely expensive and we were pretty distraught that we could not afford it. However, her best friend who already had two children of her own, told us about an off brand model that was almost exactly the same, albeit half the price. This was a real godsend for us, and we were extremely thankful to her. She also offered a ton of useful advice that really helped clear up a number of foggy issues for my wife and I. There were also a number of other people who really stepped to the plate whenever we needed help, such as my parents, who helped us buy a really expensive crib, and a number of other items we could not afford at the time.

This is why I would encourage any parents to accept any help that is offered to you. You have to learn to put your pride aside, and be humble for your baby’s sake. You have to remember that this is no longer about you, but it is about your child. Once you start thinking in this manner, it makes it much easier to make decisions, and to accept help from people when you need it.

Must-Have Equipment for a New Baby

With the birth of my second child soon approaching it is time to make the final assessment of our items on hand. Which items are guaranteed to be used? Which items can wait until we learn this baby’s temperament? Using the experience of my son’s early days I have come to the conclusion that less is necessary than the media and society would have you believe.

One thing you cannot go without –- ever — is a car seat. Hospitals will not allow you to leave with your child until they have checked that your car seat is properly installed in the vehicle that is bringing you home. Even if you Do not own a car you will need a car seat: friends and family will surely be willing to drive you and your child.

The next most important item is a nursing pillow. Not only will a nursing pillow help you nurse your infant in comfort, it will also be something you can use to help develop your child’s physical strength if you incorporate it into the tummy-time that doctors recommend be a part of each day. This is one item that you will definitely get your money’s worth.  Do not forget to grab a few nursing bras while you’re at the store.

Although most people have a crib ready for their baby while still in-utero, I think it’s uncommon for newborns to spend the night away from their mother and father. A more practical solution for the early days would be a co-sleeper (an extension to the parent’s bed specially designed to ensure the safety of the infant while keeping her within reach to make nursing easy) or even a bassinet or Moses Basket.

Although a great thing to have on hand, make sure you choose your stroller according to your particular lifestyle. Some families will use their stroller daily, and will need a sturdy stroller that can withstand the abuse. If your lifestyle will have you using a stroller less frequently, look at umbrella strollers which will allow you to keep one on hand without spending a lot for an item that will get infrequent use.

Our society views pacifiers as a norm, but are not always a good idea. Not only can using pacifiers inhibit nursing patterns from developing properly, but can also be seen as a quick fix for a crying child. Newborns cry for a number of different reasons, and although the pacifier will most likely quiet her there is no guarantee that it will be fulfilling her wishes or emotional needs. When used properly, pacifiers can be an appropriate addition to other soothing methods, just remember to remain aware that your infant’s needs are varied.

Every family is unique, and that should be taken into account when shopping for your family’s newest member. Always educate yourself to the possible benefits and drawbacks of a product before you make your purchase. Do not ever feel like you need something just because your neighbor has something similar, and feel free to outfit your home with any item you feel will make your life simpler. The simpler your life is the more you will enjoy your child.
