You can never underestimate the amount of baby stuff a new baby brings into your home, all the normal stuff such as prams, cots, change mats etc but then you also add bouncy chairs, walkers, bouncers that hang from the door, baby carriers, car seats, high chairs, baby baths, blow up rings and feeding pillows, the list is just endless.  My house felt like it was half the size and it was hard to get around without walking into something or tripping over.

As the years go by and your babies grow up into toddlers and then go to school you can slowly get rid of that equipment.  The question is, what do you do with it all?  Of course if you are planning more children in the future, the likely hood is that you will store all the baby stuff ready for the next one comes along.

If you aren’t planning anymore children, you will probably want to get rid of a lot of this equipment, but the question is how do you go about it?

Baby equipment can be very expensive and you may feel that you want to recoup some of the money you spent, by selling it on.  You can do this by advertising in a local paper or magazine, taking it to a car boot sale or selling it online on an auction site.  You might find that you don’t make very much money, as I found that baby stuff, very new and in great condition didn’t actually sell for much.  Most people like to new for their first baby and then pass it down to other children that they have.  It seems that people who buy second hand baby equipment are on a very tight budget and don’t want to spend a lot.  However if you are selling several items is can add up to a reasonable amount.

If you are not worried about making any money back you could give or loan items to friends that are expecting babies.  I think most people are happier using second hand equipment if they know where it has come from.

If you want to donate it to a good cause charity shops quite often accept baby stuff if it is in good condition, so that could be another option.  We have a co operative recycling centre nearby us that sells on things; they have a lot more space for larger items of equipment.

It is worth considering when you first buy your baby equipment, how much use you are going to get out of it, whether you really need it and also if it’s more sensible to buy second hand instead of new.  You might also thing about what you will do with it when you have finished using it.  You might decide that it’s not actually sensible to spend huge amounts of money on baby stuff you might never use.

A friend of my wife and I, to get around the inconvenience of bus travel, goes out with her buggy and a baby sling, so when she is boarding the bus she just slips her little boy into the sling and folds-up the carrier. Formamides are used to soften the foam in the carpet, but they are corrosive and can be fatal. Alfred toxicologist Bernard said: “They are solvent, manufacturing process residues that remain in the product later. They can be absorbed through breathing or skin. In general, children should not be exposed to these products.”

Belgium becomes the first European country to ban the mats and imposing a fine of 20,000 euros for anyone found selling them. Jean-Philippe Ducart, a spokesman for a consumer watchdog, said:

“They will be illegal in 2011, but meanwhile I ask you to be withdrawn from the market in the interest of public health and the health of children exposed to them.”

The EU-wide ban on the mats is expected within the next few years.

In November, the EU bans the sale of plastic baby bottles containing bisphenol A, a compound that the evidence suggests that adversely affect the health of babies.

Emotional

Self awareness will now have moved on to the next level in which the child will have an opinion and express preferences, such as in the choice of clothes and forms of entertainment.

During this development phase, the child experiences a growing interaction with its peers. This is particularly noticeable in respect of participation in a variety of games in which it will learn the involvement of taking its turn in a structured fashion. As a result, such interactions will enhance the child’s social standing within the contact groups.

The infant should be fully aware by now that objects continue to exist even when they are no longer visible, e.g. putting a toy in a box and closing the lid so the child can no longer see it.

This is an example of object permanence, which is a measure of the development in the child’s intelligence.

The natural inquisition will now be extended in the game where a number of objects were hidden around the house and the child was encouraged to establish their whereabouts.

Another manifestation of the development of the enquiring mind is the observance of a problem of some kind and the child’s ability to resolve the problem by trial and error and a basic form of experimentation.

Emotional

The growing need for the child to express itself and expand its growing sphere of influence may lead to some form of confrontation with persons in authority who may not agree with a certain course of action.

The mimicking of everyday actions, such as adults answering the phone, may progress into the social arena, such as the cuddling of a favourite toy.

The feeling of self awareness in the child will be in its identification of its position within the social fabric of the family environment.

The growing self awareness will also manifest itself in self reference, whereby the child will speak of or refer to himself through the use of the word “I”.

The child will make increasing displays of attachment, referring to the bond between the child and certain figures of authority, especially its parents.

The display of separation anxiety will become more apparent, referring to excessive distress regarding separation from the child’s home or from individuals with whom it has a strong emotional attachment, such as its parents.

The social awareness will now become more evident in the interactions resulting from certain games, such as those in which the individual members involved in the game take it in turns to perform their contribution to the overall game.
