Babies are reputed to kick up a huge fuss while eating. You’ll have food all over the place and the baby running all over your place with its messy hands.  High chairs can turn out to be useful at times like this, especially for babies around six months of age or older.  High chairs these days come with various features including music, toys, rocking etc.  While buying a high chair there are certain features you must consider before the purchase.

The most important is the baby’s safety and comfort.  You need to look for high chairs which are sturdy and don’t tip over at any cost.  High chairs are available in wooden as well as aluminum frames.  To make sure that the baby stays in place and does not slip out of the chair, high chairs usually come with straps.  Straps that just go around the baby’s waist don’t work too well because the baby can easily slip out of it.  The best would to be to go for one’s with straps at the shoulder.  They hold the baby more firmly and provide more safety.

For easier storage and portability high chairs which are foldable are available.  This can prove to a boon for those families involved in constant traveling.  But it can also prove to be fatal if the high chair accidentally folds while in use.  Wheels are also another useful feature which can turn out to be dangerous.  While having wheels is a good idea when you need to move the baby around, if the locking provided for the wheels should be sound to avoid any untoward incidents.

After safety comes the big job of cleaning up.  Trays which can be slid easily and are dishwasher safe are useful.  Vinyl seating is the easiest to wash.  Sharp edges must be avoided.  Trays with higher rims will be useful as they can hold more food.  Also the food won’t spill over as easily.  Usually high chairs come equipped with two or more trays, where one can be used for storing food items, bibs etc.  Height adjustments can be made in most high chairs so you can fix it to the height of your dining table.

Added features such as music, automatic rocking, place to hold toys etc and those that go with home décor are also available.

Various safety standards have been set for high chairs in different countries.  Make sure the product you are going for is complaint with these standards.  It gives you a surety of safety.  Some of the wildly used products are Fisher Price, Healthy Care, Evenflo.
