Choosing a toy for a toddler

During the early stages of a child’s life their brain is learning in an exponential manner. It is important that their brain is stimulated and one of the best ways to do this is by giving them toys.

I would suggest that for a toddler a soft toy is the best way forward – they won’t hurt their siblings by throwing it at them.

One of the things you need to look carefully at is what recommended age range the toy is for. An age range of 4+ would signify possible small parts – the last thing you want is for your child to choke on a toy they are playing with.

• Art materials should say nontoxic.
• Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package, which means that they’ve been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.

Steer clear of older toys, even hand-me-downs from friends and family. Those toys might have sentimental value and are certainly cost-effective, but they may not meet current safety standards and may be so worn from play that they can break and become hazardous.
