How to Find and Choose a Baby Name

That is a massive question, and one that requires a carefully considered answer. Years before pregnancy, you’d probably have dreamt about different names for your pets and children. Whether you’re a man or a woman, you have names that you like and ones that you dislike.

The problem is indecisiveness, and that’s totally understandable when naming your new born because their name will be with them for life. So there’s a bit of pressure to make sure you’re totally one hundred percent happy with it, but this is totally normal and there’s so many different ways to find and choose the right name for your baby; here’s how:

Research

There are a plethora of baby books and websites out there, ready for anyone expecting a baby to get ideas for baby names. You may want to check for names that are more current and contemporary, if so then you should check online or ask your friends and family to determine the latest baby name trends.

On the other hand you may not want to choose the same name that everyone else is going for, just because it’s current. For example your child could turn up to school to see they are one of five Jordans or Dylans. Again you can search online for unusual and uncommon baby names, just to give you an idea.

Tradition

One way of choosing a name is to go along with tradition. For example if your middle name is the same name as your mother or fathers first name, then this tradition could be passed onto your children. That way you’ll find a suitable middle name for your child, whilst keeping it meaningful to your family.

This way could be used when deciding your child’s first name as well. For example, picking a name that you like in either your family or your partner’s family; whether that’s a sister, brother, mother, father, cousin, aunt or uncle. Conversely you may not like any existing family names and want to break away from tradition; again it’s entirely your choice.

Find the Origins of names

Another way of establishing a baby name is to understand what the name means and where it gets its origins from. If you’re particularly religious or spiritual this is a great way to pass on your beliefs to your children. Likewise if you’re from a particular heritage or culture, you may want to choose a name that is more meaningful to you, your beliefs or culture.

Finding the meaning of a name first can really help too. So say if there is a particular meaning that you are fond of, then you can choose the name accordingly. Again you can find the meaning of names in any good baby name book or well established and trusted website.

Favourite Person

If there is a special someone that you admire and like or if you’re a fan of then this is another way to pick a baby name. We’ve already touched on using existing family names, but it doesn’t have to stop there. If you’re particularly fond of someone, whether it’s a best friend, a sports star, film star or musician, then this may help when deciding on a name.

It’s your choice

Remember that when it comes to naming your baby, it’s yours and your partner’s decision. Whatever the type of name you choose, it’s important that you’re both totally one hundred percent happy with it. Take on board people’s suggestions by all means, research latest name trends, choose traditional names or existing family names, but make sure it’s what you want; otherwise you’ll regret the name you’ve chosen.

Having a child is a special experience for any parent or parents. There’s so much to prepare and organise during the pregnancy phase, such as putting a comfortable room together and making sure your new born has the correct clothes, blankets and food. Whilst you can’t prepare enough for your new born baby, the real test will come once he or she enters this big wide world.

The early days, weeks and years of a baby’s life are crucial to their long term development and overall wellbeing. Not only that, but this is a special time for a parent or parents to spend time with their child, care for them and create a special bond. This is where parental leave plays a huge role.

Parental leave is a benefit where you receive paid or unpaid time off work to care for your child and make arrangements for their welfare. Parental leave can be split into what’s known as maternity and paternity, whilst there’s also adoption leave. Maternity and paternity are legal terms to stipulate the relationship that a parent has with their child, so maternity relates to the mother and paternity relates to the father.

In the UK, the mother is entitled to a statutory 52 weeks paid leave. They have payment benefits as well, however the father is also entitled to leave and payment; so what are their rights?

]]>

Ordinary Paternity Leave Entitlement

If you are employed and you take leave to care for your baby, then you’re entitled to this type of leave. As long as you’ve been working with the same employer for twenty six weeks then you’re entitled. You also must be one of the following: the biological father, the partner or husband of the mother (including same-sex relationships, the guardian of an adopted child, and the partner or husband of the guardian adopting the child (including same-sex relationships).

When it comes to taking the time off, you can take either one or two weeks off. A week constitutes as your normal working week; you are not allowed to take separate days off and if you take the full two weeks, these must be taken together.

Ordinary Statutory Paternity Pay

As long as you’ve worked with your employer for at least twenty six weeks and you inform them that you intend to take this leave by the fifteenth week before your baby is due, then you’re entitled to paternity pay. You must be earning at least £102 a week. After you’ve informed your employer you must continue to work with them without a break, up until the birth or adoption date.

With Ordinary Statutory Paternity Pay you are allowed to take leave for two weeks. The current weekly rate is at £128.73 which came into effect as of April 2011. You’re entitled to receive this amount or if you earn less than this a week, you’ll receive 90% of your average weekly earnings. You’re employer may also require you to complete a self-certificate form to confirm your entitlement.

Additional Paternity Leave

As of new changes to the law, if your baby was born after April 3rd 2011, then you have the right to take an additional 26 weeks paternity leave. This can be taken 20 weeks after your child is born or has been adopted and you can take the additional 26 weeks up to one year after birth or adoption. You may also be entitled to additional statutory paternity pay, however to qualify you must meet a certain criteria issued by the government.

The level of paternity leave will be set out with your employer. This can be viewed in a company hand book, or simply ask your boss about your paternity rights within the company.

When it comes to having a child, every moment counts. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the development of the baby in the mummy’s tummy, or having to prepare clothing for the newborns day of arrival, there is always something happening and in need of preparation during the first 9 months of your child’s development. Whether it’s your first child or your tenth though, there are things you need to acquire and prepare for that should already be in place by the time you take your newborn home from the hospital. Planning ahead is ideal to playing catch-up, because when the baby is here, one of the last things you really want to have to do is have to scurry around town trying to find the things you should have already bought for your baby’s needs. Being prepared will leave you with a sense of comfort that brings incomparable joy, compared to those that wait until the last minute.

When preparing for a baby there are various things that you typically want to purchase. First of all, you want to make sure you have hygiene items and clothing. Nappies, baby powder, thermometer and bottles are all hygiene items that you will typically need. As far as clothing goes, mittens, shirts, pants, booties, socks and hats are all applicable. There are some larger considerations to take into account as well though.

You’ll need sleeping space for your baby, either a crib, hammock or something that will give them their own space. A Moses basket (or bassinet) is truly ideal. It provides a safe, relaxing environment for your baby that’s free from disturbance. Small babies are particularly fond of these because they are small and give them a sense of security, as if in the womb. It’s also believed that by using these you can help avoid “sudden infant death syndrome”. Though there has been no one particular cause found for SID, it is strongly believed based on studies that soft bedding may well be a factor in it and a Moses bed is designed in mind with all your baby needs.

In addition to the hygiene items, the clothes and the bedding for your baby, you’re also going to need a stroller. There are baby packs that you can strap on and carry your baby around in as you shop and move around town, but getting around with your baby in these can eventually be a gruelling task for some mums. Especially if you’re not used to having to carry additional loads. There are some amazing strollers that can fulfil your need though and make travelling a dream.

Some of these strollers (or pushchairs) come in some pretty hip colours, and even some pretty stylish designs. From zebra print fabrics to vogue style designs, today’s strollers are one of a parent’s best-friend, especially if you’re one that’s often out and about. Take a look for some with a fleecy baby’s nest, cup-holders, harness pads, ventilated rain-cover, shopping baskets and carry handles. Adding one of these to your final list of baby items is just like adding icing to the cake.

Five Dolls’ Accessories Your Child Will Love

Children seek to emulate. They are new to the world; their explorations and limited experiences have led them to believe that the best way to learn about this new world of theirs is to copy the people they look up to.

For most children, that means their parents. This is why we often see a lot of children attempting to copy adult actions, particularly mundane ones like going off to the market and cooking.

This is also perhaps why dolls have become so very popular over the years. Children see adults taking care of them, or even their younger siblings, and they seek to emulate this behaviour. What better way to look all grown up than to have a baby of your own to care for, right?

Here are five lovely dolls’ accessories that your child will love. They make play time all the more fun and imaginative.

Dollhouse – nothing says “adult life” more than having a household of your own to run. Dollhouses can range from the most simple (one or two rooms, with sparse furniture) to seriously elaborate. They can provide hours of fun and entertainment, especially if the dollhouse offers more than a few furniture that the child can actually interact with. Be careful, though: some dollhouses can have very small parts, which makes them unsuitable for younger children who might swallow them.
Dolls clothing – Barbie dolls are the most notorious when it comes to clothing. Children like to play dress up, and more often than not, they’ll find a way to sneak into your closet and try your clothes on. Why not do the same things with their dolls? Pre-made clothes that are made exactly for dolls are available everywhere. This makes mixing and matching clothing (and shoes and handbags, even) much more fun and interesting. Again, small items like doll’s shoes should be kept away from very young children.
Dolls prams – Now this is a fun item. Children love to show off their toys, and what better way to do so than with dolls prams? These prams are designed to look almost exactly like the real thing. The best ones are designed in a traditional pram’s model, allowing the dolls prams to look completely authentic with the large wheels, the additional shopping basket underneath, and the hooded carriage to house the doll. It’s a fun way for children to really play “grown up” with dolls prams, allowing them to parade with their little lovely babies. Bonus: these lovely dolls prams look very chic and are specifically designed to be easily manoeuvrable by children.
Hair accessories – This sounds weird, but a lot of children find hair very interesting. How many children have gone off and cut their dolls’ hair, only to find out that it won’t actually grow back? Some doll companies offer hair accessories and extensions that make playing with dolls’ hair fun. You could even find washable hair dyes!
Cooking and feeding utensils – Yes, children love to cook, even if it’s just ripped up paper stirring around in their pots. There are dolls designed to look like they’re eating, and even come pre-packaged with milk bottles and plastic food.

So when you’re looking for gifts next time, take note of these fun accessories and have a good time with the children in your life.

The skin is actually the largest organ of the human body and ultimately what we put on our own skin will be absorbed in to all of our body. Baby’s new skin is actually much more fragile and thinner compared to adults and his or her developing bodies happen to be more susceptible to substances in non-organic products. This makes them a lot more likely to develop allergic reactions to substances such as fragrances and also residues of ingredients in clothing being absorbed through the skin resulting in allergies, skin rashes or breathing difficulties.

Just about 25% of all the world’s insecticides as well as 10% of pesticides happen to be sprayed on cotton. As cotton is not primarily a food item, some of the most toxic and aggressive pesticides or herbicides are used – and it’s these that are responsible for poisoning wildlife as well as waterways. As bugs develop resistance to chemical substances, farmer borrows money to purchase more chemicals than before, farmer gets less returns from crop, repeat until farmer is destitute. Many substances applied in cotton farming tend to be acutely toxic and at least three of them are in the “dirty dozen” – so harmful that one hundred twenty nations agreed at a UNEP meeting in 2001 to ban them and so far this hasn’t happened.

The World Trade Organisation estimates 20,000 deaths and 3 million chronic health and fitness problems each year are the consequence of the use of agricultural insecticides in developing countries. In addition textile production uses 1000′s of chemicals to clean, bleach, prepare, color, print and finish textiles with lots of of these types of substances being highly toxic.

Natural farming and cloth production prohibits the use of dangerous pesticides and fertilisers and ensures strict guidelines on any chemicals used in the production of textiles meaning these natural fibres are renewable and eco-friendly. Heavy chemical use upsets ecosystems and contaminates water supplies and worse still, pests exposed to artificial insecticides create up a resistance to them. So each year, farmers have to buy and use more pesticides to grow the same amount of cotton cloth – increasing the annual damage to the environment. All in all, certainly not something we wish to place next to baby’s skin then!

There is actually a different way – natural baby clothing. Natural cotton is less likely to activate allergy which means that organic cotton baby clothes are very kind to eczema. Organic cotton feels better too due to the fact the cotton fibres are left intact and not broken down by the substances. As an aside from this procedure, organic cotton clothes clean well and last more time.

Emma Crosby recommends BabyLoves, a leading internet store selling only organic baby products in the UK. BabyLoves have a great range of organic baby clothes as well as lots of great baby gifts.

Why All New Parents Need A Digital Baby Monitor

If you have a new baby at home, you are obviously proud parents and want to know your baby is safe and secure at all times. This is where a digital baby monitor can really help relieve your stress and concern that your baby is OK even though he or she is in another room.

There are quite a few different ones on the market but the new digital ones are usually superior to the old analog ones. They are also wireless and very easy to use. There are options that only give you audio input so you can hear your baby if it starts to snuffle or cry so you can immediately go and see what’s wrong. Some come with video so you can see your little one as well. Even if the room is dark, some have infrared so you can still see your baby.

These digital baby monitors are fairly reasonable in price. It is also a wonderful present for new parents or even at the baby shower. There’s nothing better than to know your baby is safe and secure when he’s not in the same room with you.

Here are a few tips when doing your research into these devices.

]]>

Choose a monitor that has a good signal range. There’s no point if the kitchen means you are out of range of your child’s bedroom! This isn’t usually the case and these monitors range 650 to 850 feet which is usually fine for the average home. Just remember a busy mom will take advantage when her child is asleep to be in the kitchen making meals, possibly in the basement doing the laundry or even in the garden. Check this feature before you buy just to make sure.

Another concern is the clarity of transmission. Digital monitors are usually great but analogue ones can have problems depending on the frequency used.

Choosing audio or audiovisual ones. An audio baby monitor is really fine for every occasion. It does the job. Parents can hear their child and some monitors even have a feature where you can speak to your child and comfort him through your monitor in say the living room.

Nowadays, many people choose a video baby monitor. It is lovely to see your child as well. You can be assured that he or she is not getting tangled up in the blankets or putting her legs through the side bars, as you can see your baby. Many also have the feature that you can take photos as well.

Regardless of type, most monitors have a feature with a backlight. This is great as it means you can see the monitor in a dark room so you don’t need to put on the main light and disturb your child.

The more sophisticated (and usually more expensive) the monitor, the more features it has. Weigh up carefully if these added features are worth the price. For example, some models are extremely portable. This is a great bonus if you visit friends and family a lot with your baby and put him or her in another room to rest. You can take along your monitor and still enjoy your evening out because you can hear your baby should he or she awaken.

In summary, a digital baby monitor is a godsend to new parents. There are many models and brand names out there so do your research carefully and get the model that fits your needs and your budget.
